When Day Jobs Attack!
I simply must share this:
I work in a very respectable 9-5 job that I've been in for over two years now. I never discuss my performing life with my coworkers, preferring to keep the two totally seperate. However, because my supervisor is a bit nosy she's found out quite a lot and never seems to make trouble for me, so I don't mind. Apparently tho, rumours have filtered through because the very elderly granddame of the whole operation. A very stately 90 something English women that I'm very fond of, has just sidled up to me, stared at me fixedly over the course of a couple minutes and then said, with great gravity:
"my dear... you aren't a lap dancer are you?"
to which i blushed completely crimson and replied in the negative
"but... you don't lead... an unsavoury lifestyle... do you?"
Omg! The only thing I could trust myself to say was that I did it quite a lot of the time for fundraisers and charity events and that I hadn't done anything that I wouldn't have been happy to invite her to. It's true, I don't think of burlesque or fire dancing as unsavoury in the least, and it's a lot tamer and more fun than what goes on during daytime tv these days.
Has anyone else experianced a clash of day job and night job? I'm absolutely gobsmacked over this but I think it's too funny not to share with y'all!
xx

Aaw bless her. She sounds so sweet!
I think you replied in a really good way. What was her response?

Love that "an unsavoury lifestyle"!
That sounds like the beginnings of a great tag line...
I haven't got any instances of my lifestyles clashing, because it hasn't happened yet - other than me telling my mental health care nurse that I was signed up to do a burlesque course and seeing her jaw drop to the floor because she'd been trying to get me out of the house for over a month just to go to the supermarket or shops.
More recently I had to pop to school and got some fantastic doubletakes from other mums because I was in a dress, heels and makeup from trying stuff out for photos instead of my usual hair scraped back in ponytail, no makeup, oversized Green Day t-shirt, jeans and DMs.
Not as exciting or funny as yours. That would have me smiling for days!

She just said that she was relieved and would take that into account. I spoke to my supervisor who thinks it was because my forearm tattoo was visible yesterday (I always keep them covered but yesterday wore 3/4length sleeves) and perhaps she thought it was a bit shocking, she does come from a different generation after all. My supervisor is going to try and find out where the rumours are coming from.
She is really very sweet.

I used to be a Probation Officer and I know they were monitoring me when I did lots of stand-up comedy to see if I said anything un-PC.
But now ... im trying to lead as unsavoury a lifestyle as possible !!!

Well the problems with my day job were written about in my column for 21st Century Pinup magazine. Its not so bad now that I am leaving...just waiting for the contract to finish though they have asked me to stay on...like hell I will!

by day i'm a student welfare advisor! by night i'd probably put them to shame....
Its hard enough trying to keep my life private from the students when im socialising in the same city as them!! I dont wear any makeup for work, always wear my glasses and have hair scraped back. hence when i go out and do a 'clark kent' they dont tend to recognise me!
However, i will not be performing locally when i do finally get my act quite literally together!
Can you imagine it?? Friday night student goes to show and sees a lovely lady performing down to her tassels n frillies.......monday morning they go into Uni to see a welfare adviser as theyve not received their loan yet and argh...she looks vaguley familiar?! Could this be the young lady who was tassell twirling?? So not worth the risk hahaha!!!

I don't have any problems at my job - thought I would as it's a PC place to work. I reckon 99.9% of the non-support staff employees read The Guardian - some of whom I know in the Midlands area - but no one recognised me on the front cover of the Listings section.
I'm starting a new job in a few weeks, so we'll see what that brings...
Having said that, I can be mysterious have on lots of occasions been called a 'dark horse'...
