It IS a friendly community otherwise I would never have started the thread about how nice it is!

Secondly, no I don't have to reply to the thread here but well I'm going to... because this has happened before... this isnt the first time an act has been discussed and it won't be the last.

It was merely me wanting to speak up and say please if you post this be aware it might not remain as original as you had hoped. I do not have the intention of keeping burlesque exclusive to performers as neither do lucille and rufus. If I did, I wouldn't run free beginners performance workshops or offer mentoring.

I know nothing was meant in an offensive way but its very hard not to be offended when I've simply offered advice as you all have and been told i'm effectively being exclusive and acting as if posters are naive. Of course you aren't!!

We're not ogres, we aren't calling anyone anything thats an interpretation; it's not letting the site down and I thought I was helping people by providing a little advice. I certainly started by using the forums for advice and help going way back to asking what music to use. I'm only saying in my case, posting an idea meant it was used and then the money from my part time job was used on a costume that was never staged.

It was just a suggestion but guys talk all you want about it, I do think it's an awesome idea and I really really hope to see it come to fruition; I do feel rollerskates would be the cherry on the cake

xx

This is a really interesting thread. I feel like I am on both 'sides' (for want of a better word) because I make my living from bellydancing, but I am only just starting out with burlesque performing. I think there needs to be a balance. I haven't really been on this forum long enough to see anything otherwise, but those starting out do need to have respect for the industry (and I don't mean that anyone in this thread doesn't!!!!!!) and for those who have been around.
I have mentored a few belly dancers who I was quite close to (my first mistake), only to find that they turned around and started teaching my routines, in my area (literally across the road!!), under cutting me for gigs, which in my opinion is a really really nasty thing to do. However, on the other hand, it is hard for me to break into the national dance scene because it is very clicky. So I think there needs to be a balance between helping and accepting those who have just discovered which ever art form it is, and those performers respecting the need for common sense when it comes to beginning to perform.
Like I said before, I haven't come across anyone on this forum that is nasty about gigs etc, and I don't mean anybody in this thread! But unfortunately this does occur. It is sad.

But don't be discouraged December!!! It will be a great routine!!!

I don't think anyone intended to come across with a patronising tone. Knowing both Amelie and Lucille personally, I can say that these are two grounded, honest and sensible women

There's nothing wrong with asking for tips and hints - and likewise, there's nothing wrong with posting a reply/response. I've asked some very basic questions in my time... gosh, I'm tempted to search the forums for an example!

As I understand, Amelie and Lucille were merely offering the voices of experience and highlighting some of the not-so-wonderful issues that have arisen from the otherwise wonderful world of the internet. One can easily flip the old saying 'every cloud has a silver lining' on its head. For example, what if December were to perform a wonderful, new diner girl act, only for someone to find this thread and start a vicious rumour about the extent to which they perceived her being involved in the act's creation...

...while this happening is quite unlikely, it's still a possibility (hence the suggestion of conducting 'idea storming' sessions via PM). Being regular forum users (or lurkers, dear readers), WE all know that December is as creative as the next burlesque artiste, and WE all know that Tempest has put forward her fabulous ideas with full consent for December (or, perhaps, any forum reader) to use them to his/her own ends... but unfortunately this is not immediate knowledge to the average passer-by.

The catty reputation of the entertainment industry (IN GENERAL) hasn't arisen out of no-where - it's sprung from the affects of too many people competing for too few jobs. This said, burlesque is sedate in comparison with some of the other entertainment sectors - sheesh!

I think the point is simply that one ought to tread carefully when caught up in the excitement of a new idea. My Mum fell victim to excitement once. She had an idea for making 'flexitime calculators'. She had hundreds of the blighters made up before she had enough orders to cover the cost! In the end, I think someone else copied her idea and marketed it much more successfully. She made enough to cover her costs, but unfortunately her plans for self-employment never came to fruition

Now, back to the happy stuff. Can I use my snakeboard at this virtual roller disco?! I promise I'll bring leg warmers and a neon, high-leg, thong-leotard!

I don't think anyone tried to be patronising. In the end it's just passing different advices. I'm not doing it for a living either but I can see what Lucille and Amelie tried to point out. It's up to each individual to decide if they think it applies to them or not. Don't get upset about things ladies, just use things that are helpful for you and ignore things that you think aren't helpful.

I prefer honest opinions over everything.

Yes, but the point is: they may be hobbyists but they'll still end up performing on the same stage as the professionals this also means that they'll be competing with the pros for work - hence the concerns about giving advice.

It's wonderful that there are so many folk here who can and will help out. It's also wonderful that people do feel able to ask for advice but Beatrix' point was perfectly made - there are a lot of folk who lurk on this forum and some of them don't have the MoB's best interests in mind (some of them are even here looking for ammo!) If you go on stage in this business, you get subjected to the same scrutiny as the professionals and there are a lot of meanies out there!

No need to disagree, Tempest; no-one called anyone thick or naive, or even implied it. It just has to be understood that, for some of us; there's an element of caution involved in giving advice.

December, your act sounds great! I'm sure it's only a matter of time until i see it on stage somewhere (or on Youtube shortly after) and I'm sure it'll be a fantastic, original act.

Remember everyone - the first thing you need to do this (either as a hobby or professionally) is a thick skin!
