Default Is Scotland too far away?

Right, Lucille and I have been wondering;

There’s a thriving scene in Scotland and yet, after discussion with a number of folk up here who run events, it would seem that we don’t get many English, Irish or Welsh burlesque fans attending.

So, all you folk who live south of Hadrian’s Wall, do you (or have you ever) come to events in Scotland?

I know that traditionally we’re not supposed to get on but we’d love it if you all came to visit us!

Is it a geographical thing?

Is it buggery.

I'd love to come upto glasgow more often. I think the trouble is that aside from certain events unless you know people in scotland the gigs aren't shoved in our faces enough.

The only club night i keep hearing about is glasgow based and it doesn't interest me as the acts are all newbies and money isn't being spent on headliners.
If im going to a newbies night i don't expect to pay full wack.
And then there is a seperate night simular to the sugar fix social but without the acts. ( don't really see the point )

I want to see a best of scots burlesque

Missy Malone, Little Red Fairy, Viva Misadventure, Daquarie Dusk, Vendetta Vain, and of course you guys.

Yup, F@*k the frindge, If there was a glasgow burlesque festival i'd be up like a shot.

Well... The Dr Sketchy Birthday Bash (August 10th in Glasgow) has,

from Scotland:
Missy Malone, Daiquiri Dusk, Sakura Tsui, Wild Card Kitty, Jack Hammer, Chopper Harley, Vendetta Vain, Petit Chou-Chou (formerly Busty McLusty), Mia Meow, Rosie Hart and the incomparable Leggy Pee as well as us!

From the US:
Molly Crabapple, Kitten on the Keys and Cat Aclysmic (OK, so Cat's based in Scotland now)

From Ireland (but an honorary Scot):
Leyla Rose

And from England:
The one and only, Beatrix von Bourbon!

All for only £7 !!!

There are some big, worthwhile, gigs up here but I agree that some events aren't publicised well south of the border. But, to be honest; the English events don't tend to advertised up here - it's really only the die-hards that know about them and we travel down for the big ones.

Luckily, Shake it Doll! by the lovely Beatrix Von Bourbon covers events from all over the UK without prejudice!

I think the following would all help:

1. Stressing that national express run an overnight bus from London and gets you to Glasgow for just £10 (if you buy early enough!). That's £20 return! Bargain.

2. It's also worth highlighting the cities where you can get an evening train home (I've done this in the blog on http://www.myspace.com/hotmuffinsburlesque) ...oh and tell everone that your venue's DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH GLASGOW CENTRAL!! Convenient, much?

3. Open up a B&B. Or, failing that, tell those of us who are a little further away where the cheap-but-nice accommodation is.

4. Get the flyers circulating online! Bulletin on MySpace, set up an event page on that awful Facebook thing...

Basically, all those little local details that you know about how wonderful your venue is, how good the transport links are etc. etc. are worth communicating to those of us who are a little less well-informed.

I would love to come and perform up in Scotland to as I have lots of mates up there that have not seen me perform. I lived and studied in Dundee for a year and I am from Scottish stock on my mothers side. But as Heathers says I normally on hear about events after they have been booked up.

Scotland's no further away than London...I don't get there either...and I'm more likely to get to Scotland because it's nicer. I think I'd get to loads more burlesque shows around the whole of the United Kingdom if I lived closer to the M1....I hate the M6.

Well now that depends where you are! I live pretty centrally in England, meaning I can get pretty much anywhere easily, if not quickly or cheaply. I can get to London in 2-3 hours. My OH's family live in Fife, and that's a 5-6 hour journey. Edinburgh and Glasgow would be about the same time. That's a little too far for me to go for one night's entertainment. But the same could be said about the south coast, especially the southwest, as it's similar distance. No, if I were going to go see a burly night in Scotland, I'd have to be going there for a few days anyway to make it worthwhile, and I reckon anyone based any further south than me would probably say the same.

Well done Rufus, a topic long overdue for discussion in my opinion!

While you may be lucky and get some weekends where there is burlesque in Edinburgh or Glasgow two or three nights in a row, Fleur is right in pointing out that it is a long trip for one event. Links to other cool events that are happening around the same time may be helpfull in tempting people up, and Beatrix's idea about links to travell and cheep accomodation is also good.

There is a HUGE amount going on up here and we would hate you all to miss it!

P.S:

I doubt I could attend any events in Scotland because of money and children, although the same applies for London events or most events outside of Birmingham.

However, I do know that my other half, Angel LaVey (shameless plug) would love to perform in Scotland. Scotland is the last remaining major area she has yet to perform in...

...any takers?
