I agree with Al & Sarah; particularly Al's point, if you have a promoter or venue manager who is put off by professionalism there is definitely cause for worry. But also agree with Sarah that for smaller bookings an e-mail trail is good enough to set things down.
As a producer and event manager for my own company and for a local authority here in Scotchyland I deal with artists and agents daily and thorough T&Cs are just par for the course. There's nothing worse than things being up in the air, a paper trail is also essential so that other members of your team can look and clearly see what status you are at wtih a booking.
From a promoters POV; I'm organising all the street & parade entertainment for an outdoor arts festival we have here in June so as well as just confirming availability and artists requirements our own terms need to be adhered to - health & safety, risk assessments and public liabilty insurance etc. All these things are so important for a successful and smooth event, so there should be some wiggle room to discuss terms with an artist.
In short, oh aye, bring on the organised professional with nicely detailed performance agreements, it's where we all should be at.
