Kittens
Hello,
I work in a rescue cattery so please, please, please go to one near you. So many people are breeding dogs and cats because they think they can sell them in the local paper and make some money; however, usually, they end up being dumped on the animal charities if not worse. Many of the big charities, like Cats Protection and the Blue Cross have strict homing policies, but if you ask around you will probably find one that doesn't have the guidelines and just want good homes.
I would suggest that it is best to get two kittens so they entertain each other and generally cause less damage as a pair than a bored solo one does (on saying that, I have one of my cats under my skirt having a boxing match with the one on the other side so I'm getting damaged!).
The bigger charities will home older or cats with special needs in to flats as indoor cats.
I'm sorry to get on to my soap box about this but I'm very passionate about it.
Before I go, a lot of pedigree cats, in our disposable society of wanting the best until bored with it, (sorry, soap box again!), have their own rescues. I know there is a Persian rescue, a Siamese and a Maine Coon rescue but I'm sure there are many more.
If you can bear to come near the crazy cat woman again I may be able to point you in the direction of rescue catteries near you.
Before I go, I'm sorry about your other cat. When my last cat died I was devastated and it took me a couple of months before I could get another one. It was odd going from an older cat to a kitten, and I still miss her lots, but my two (I learnt from only having one kitten!) are both gorgeous.
