Yay to Amelie for taking money away from the Olympics - not that it matters as the public will foot the difference in the form of Taxation - direct or indirect.
As for the Freud 'wanting to do the nasty with Mum and Dad' - my initial thought was eeeww also, but after a while I started working on my own hypothesis based on childrens needs and wants from a childs point of view, rather than the same view from a Freudian adult. My basis is that children are taught that they have a male parent and a female parent, the child then learns that the supposed norm is they will grow up and marry someone of the opposite sex whom they love - to the child the ideal candidate to marry is the parent of the opposite sex to them. This was a scenario that happened with Angel when her son was 3 years old. I think it is adults who then project the sexual nature onto the innocent desire for love and caring.
Sadly I don' get to learn much about Freud anymore - my Diploma course is now Person Centered and Gestalt, not under the Psychodynamic umbrella. :-(

oh hun, i'm an 83 kid and i know that feeling...first for SATs age nine, last for pure A-Levels so no attention cos of new course confusing teachers...
but you may hate me... i did the children's lit module... mainly cos we have 'seven stories' the centre of the childrens book here
it was really good and i ended up writing about censorship in kids lit, eg. you can buy the shining the book at any age and is your imagination mroe dangerous than what a film tells you is scary...
good stuff...miss it

That's not a bad way of looking at things. It was all the identification that got to me - fair enough, he has a point when he says that the same-sex parent is the first role model for a child and they do try to emulate them, and girls to tend to play with dolls or 'babies', but the reasons behind the identification really bugged me. Does a young boy actually fear his father is going to castrate him to keep him away from his mother? Does a young girl actually think she has already been castrated? Does she really suffer from penis envy and substitute it with broodiness? And do girls actually have less well-developed superegos and morals than boys for this reason? I don't think so! This reasoning is what really lets Freud down in my opinion, and trying to say that women are less developed than men is the final straw!
I'm sorry to have ranted so far off burly topic, but it's really quite nice to be able to discuss things like this with other people who know what they're talking about ^_^

You might have been year above me then - I was one of the first for SATS in year 6, some weird tests in year 3, first for CATS in year 7, SATS again in year 9, first for new GCSE syllabus, first year to do 'Education 2000' i.e. AS and A2 levels, not to mention the highly useless Key Skills, which apparently universities insisted on (none of the admissions people had ever heard of the damn things, so it's a good thing they completely messed up all the marking) - it just went on and on!

Oh I don't hate you - I'm just jealous ... You didn't happen to go to my uni though, did you? The course sounds awfully similar!

I don't think the topic was very Burlesque in the first place. Did you ever learn about Erik Eriksson (sp?), he took Freuds theories of childhood and created his own version - changing some of the meaning behind the stages.
I sure hear you about the fear and castration stages - again my own theories are a little less extreme and are more based on hierarchy, a need for protection and trying to fit in with society - this heads towards the core concept. Perhaps Freud needed to sit on hs couch and have someone counsel him!

I seem to dimly remember Eriksson, but don't quote me on it.
We often voiced the opinions in my A Level class that perhaps Freud had his own issues ^_^ I remember one lad, after being told yet another sexually-centred theory, simply blurting out "Bloody Freud, it's all sex and yer mum!" Words to live by, if ever there were any ...
I can't be doing with much of Freud's child development theory - I don't want to be told I'm morally inferior to a man thank you! - but some of the psychoanalytical theories on sexuality are quite compelling. Often quite disturbing, especially about female but nonetheless valid, I think.

Just realised that I left my computer on all night and today while I was out so it probably looks like I'm never offline!
Although it may help if I was banned from being on here for the next few hours so i can start my dissertation instead.

I can relate to what you are saying Sweet Scarlet. Although I only need to do my reflective journal for last week I have sauntered here instead. I also have a couple of books I need to read as well as some heavy duty hand outs from my course tutors.
When I have to do my essays I'm legendary at procrastination - God (sic) help me if I ever have to do a dissertation.

I decided to be really tough on myself and be the first student on my course to do a dissertation as a presentation- if you read the briefs carefully it's described as a commentary with visuals- this doesnt mean it has to be written commentary.
So not only do I have to get my brain into gear and find all the info I'm also working out how to do it as a lecture that involves a lot of technical bits I've never done and a trapeze that I'm not much good at!
Lurking in here is so much nicer.

Vic, you have to be a real Elvis fan to know this song.
But who do you think his co-star is? None other than:
Angela Lansbury.
