Smile Opinions wanted

Hi everyone,

I'm a third year student at Strathclyde Uni, and as part of my course I'm writing an article on Burlesque, particularly with regards to feminism.

I was hoping that people would be willing to give their opinion on this.

So, is Burlesque feminist?
Has your confidence increased since you started performing?
What would you say to people who believe that Burlesque is exploitative of women?

Any and all views will be welcome - I've done some factual research on the background of Burlesque and such, and have ordered 'The Happy Stripper' but I'd really like to have some personal views in the article.

Many thanks,

Lil' Phoenix

It might be worth your while getting in touch with Doris La Trine. She organised a symposium on feminist debates within Neo-Burlesque at Central School. See this old thread:

http://www.ministryofburlesque.com/b...ig-debate.html

It might also be worth contacting the speakers to ask if they would be prepared to send you copies of the papers they gave. To start, I know Angela McRobbie is in the media and communications department of my uni, Goldsmiths:

Goldsmiths > Media and Communications > Staff

I hope that helps!

Post Thanks

That's great, thank you!

Oh, another question if anyone wants to answer...

How do people react to you when you say you're a Burlesque performer?

Many thanks,

I usually get 'Oooooh really??' shortly followed my a bit of a wide eyed 'so what do you actually do then?' and the obligatory 'so do you actually take your clothes off then?' I seem to get a bit of interest and intrigue, but then they treat me the same, and no one's ever reacted negatively to me, despite my fears that they would

Ooh forgot to say, maybe PM Miss Violet Delight as she was doing a dissertation on the very same theme not so long ago and you may be able to help each other out. Unless you happen to find that you're at the same Uni on tha same course ...

Thanks everyone.

Would anyone be willing to do an interview? It would only take a few minutes and could be done via email (or PM, whatever).

My assignment is in the form of an article, and ideally I need some quotes from people who watch and/or perform Burlesque.

If anyone could help, that would be great,

Thanks,

Lil' Phoenix

Hi there! I have given this link to a few people who are doing work on Burlesque and feminism. It is taken from a less posative stance, but should provide some good theoretical counterpoints.

Hope it works out for you.

whilst generally a good article, the guardian does worry me with

i believe at the time, empress stah was performing at this event and she is an award winning aerialist... but the critic writes off the event so easily...

the line up was good 2005, much better than some other 'burlesque' we saw that year. Personally I didn't like 'The Burlesque Hour' but adored 'Le Clique'
Balagan was a great idea but apart from the projection screen it offered very little of interest.

anyways...
