Lil' Phoenix,

If you need someone to interview then count me in. I work just round the corner from Strathclyde uni so we could meet for lunch or something if you wanted. I, just like everyone else, have quite a few opinions on feminism in burlesque.

Let me know if this helps at all.

Petit

I also liked the bit when the article says "who wants to see someone take their clothes off and lip-sync whilst trying not to giggle?"

I can't say I have ever seen a performer on stage "trying not to giggle".

I have. Often it's me. This is usually when I'm acting though. There was one play I was in where I was acting alongside a fantastically talented lad who kept ad-libbing. I simply could not keep a straight face - but nor could the audience. I've seen professionals on stage trying not to giggle because the audience is laughing so much - I saw the League of Gentlemen live and one guy just could not get his lines out because the audience all knew what was coming and wouldn't stop laughing. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying not to giggle if it's the audience's reactions to your act that's making you laugh. It's a bit of interaction and shows you're acknowledging them and their opinions. There was no need for the article to mention it in a derogatory way, as if it makes people look unprofessional, as I don't think it does, personally - more that you're having a good time.

I've seen very few burlesquers lip-sync though. I have seen lip-sync used as a big part of drag queen acts, and I suppose there might be a bit of a crossover in terms of cabaret etc., but otherwise I can't see what they might be thinking of!

thats what I meant Fleur. I couldn't think of how to phrase it. It's been a long day

I guess I was getting at the way it makes performers seem unprofessional,

The Guardian article is a piece of journalism rather than academic writing, and I never saw the show in question so I couldn’t comment on the accuracy of it’s critique of the individual performers, however, I do think it’s a good piece for people to be aware of if they are writing about Burlesque in an academic context.

I think we can become so used to viewing the Burlesque scene through the lens of ‘neo-feminism’ that sees only freedom of choice and empowerment, it can sometimes be forgotten that there is a very large group of feminist critics who work within the ideology that burlesque is essentially reductive and exploitative.

I personally don’t agree with that but, hey, the joys of university!

definitely think it's a good piece to point people to when researching burlesque i just wanted to point out the critic's viewpoint.

(lots of points above haha!)

there are people far better versed than i in feminist theory so i tend to run the other direction when that gets brought up
