Default Save Camden Market!!!!!!!!!

Camden Council have given the go ahead for the wrecking balls to go in and destroy Stables Market in Camden.

This means the end of The Proud Galleries (served notice closing in a couple of weeks), the funky, vintage stores, Cyberdog, etc - you get the gist - one of the best things in all of London is about to be taken away from us.

What are they putting in it place? Boots, H&M and Topshop. I'm sorry to those who like these stores, but that is just not the place for them. There are already all those stores in every city in the country we dont need them getting rid of the fantastic alternative shopping experience camden offers. WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN!

PLEASE help us stop them from doing this by signing the petition:

Petition to: cancel the proposed idea's to replace camden's unique market area with a shopping centre.

please please please repost this in myspace bulletins or any where its going to be seen and signed!

I've signed that (or one very much like it) this morning.
Unfortunately, I've also looked at their track record as far as accepting petitions goes. The answers so far can be summed up as
-No, the local council will decided (our most likely answer)
-No, the law covers that just fine in our humble opinion
-No, we don't like that idea (eg the 11,664 sigs asking to please allow voluntary euthanasia in the case of terminally ill patients)
-No.
-(avoid answering)

They 'will benefit commercially from an even more attractive destination for shopper.'

They charm was that it was so ugly- I want cobbles to trip me up in my Swear boots and moudly bricks and the smell of curry and donuts and music pouring out of Cyberdog, not glass and lino and lifts.

I hate that all shopping town centres look the same - there is little reason to travel now when shopping - as areas are now becoming less diverse as we becoming increasingly globalised! Macdonaldisation!

Traders Bullied In Market Plan
All affected traders will be welcome to return to the new buildings once they are completed
Why do I somehow doubt this? Now that they have their monstrosity of glass and steel, are they really going to let those scruffy looking independent traders back in? What about my favourite antique place, with the lovely lady who always makes reductions in price for her glass and clothing? Hell, even if they are 'welcome' I don't think they'll be able to afford to move back in!
*sniffle*
My favourite shops have a limited lifespan anyway, though, so I'm used to it. The Arcade I used to adore went down in a 'mystery fire'- but the owners can't redevelop it into expensive offices the way they wanted to, because they're too scared the angry punks who got all their music from the Arcade will plague them and scare off customers, heehee.
I wonder if the plague of goths and punks and funny looking people will stop chains like TopShop?

Well, there goes one of my favorite landmarks. To me Camden is London, and the stables are the sum of all that makes Camden unique.

I signed the petition nontheless.

That's the really sad thing, Camden is such an influentual, legendary place. People go to London JUST to go to Camden. It's a really sad thing to happen. Even if you are skint you just go for the atmosphere

Proud isn't actually closing: they've bought the Horse Hospital instead and are planning to demolish the inside apparently as it's only the outside that is listed!
