There is a chap who comes out of a huge plastic fronted box as an action man. The thing about big props they look good but unless you have transport and help every time you go to a gig they can be a problem, but they do look good. After doing lots of gigs this year in London and having to use the tube I have made all my props so they pack down.
I have seen a couple of wind up doll routines as well on U tube I am not as good as broomy so can not add them but they are out there, so maybe have a look so you can make yours different.
Maybe go for the simple version of the doll one to start with and if you get it up and running then you could plan for the house wife one.
Hope thats of some help good luck honey

Eva Braun also does a doll act - in a pink tutu dress and stripey stockings. She occasionally begins by coming out of a box.

When it comes to chosing an act I'll first ask the promoter if they have a preference (they, if anyone, should know what will go down best with their crowd). If the promoter says 'whatever you fancy', I'll then do a bit of research about the event and select an appropriate act for the night from that. If it's an event I've been a regular performer at, I might try out a new act to see how it fares with a regular audience.

If all else fails, I'll look at which acts are good to go and which need something (e.g. laddered stockings need replacing)!

And, wherever possible, I always stay sober and drive - it keeps expenses down and means I get to snuggle up in my own bed - lovely!

Well i've got a lot of time to think about it now as i won't be performing in October. I canceled it as one money is rather tight at the moment and i still need to get our house sorted plus i want to run my own business, as i'm so fed up with my job and my holiday days are rubbish so if i want to perform or see a performance its always during the week and i can't take time off for that and don't get paid for being off sick.

I'm rather depressed about it all at the mo as i've been wanting to perform for ages and couldn't believe it when i finally got accepted but its a waste of time me doing it, if i can't get what i need for it etc as i want it to be good...

*sigh* Why are things always better in your own little world...

And just a little hand up from me to say that I actually do a number of different doll acts! As has Roxy Velvet if I recall correctly... But as was said before, loads of people do very different versions, so all you really need to check is a few photos of the acts to make sure it doesn't look too similar.

Oh CC - you poor thing - don't despair!

I really hope you get to do the gig even if it's not until later in the year.

Personally when I'm thinking up new acts I start with the music. If nothing in your current music collection excites you go down to HMV or somewhere like that and have a rifle through the less mainstream sections (check out 'world music'/'soundtracks'/jazz and blues'/'rock n roll) or if you're technologically minded (unlike me!)look around on the net (myspace etc.) and have a listen to some music you wouldn't normally listen to.

You might sit and listen to a dozen crappy tracks but then you'll find a gem that completely inspires you and the character ideas will often grow naturally from the vibe/style of the music! If you have a look on myspace you can often hear entire songs before you have to buy them so you dont have to waste hard-earned cash on CDs you might not like when you get home.

Give it a go! - it might not work but it's always worth a go and whatsmore you're more likely to come up with something that's a bit unique. Just have a listen and let your imagination run wild!!

Good luck!

I think Fifi is right and you should still give it a go. You can do acts and they do not always come out as you think they should and people don't get them or they are not funny but when you get it right its such a buzz.
Good luck and keep it up as it sounds like you really want to do it but you are putting all these hurdles in your own way. Be Brave on the whole burly crowds are very lovely and will support you even if you slip, fall off a chair, get stuck in your costume, your music does not work, your balloons pop at the wrong time. I have seen all of the above happen and some have happened to me and if you mange to get through it with a smile on your face people will clap.
Best of luck
