Yes that's what I do too, if I value something at £20 then I bid £20. One of the reasons for snipping is to try and achieve the lowest possible price, but if you bid the maximum you are prepared to pay then the sniper will have to bid more than that anyway because if two bids are recieved for the same amount then ther first one placed takes priority.
In my experience very little is actually as rare you think and another seller with the same thing often appears soon after. The new seller not having realised their item was worth X until they saw someone else selling it.

Im in agreement with Angel,i think you should have a limit of what you can afford and not go a penny over that!!Its sooo easy to get carried away with it and end up paying way over the odds for something and also you then have the dreaded postage and packing costs!!!The amount that some people charge is frankly ridiculous!!

This happened to me today and I almost cried. I see it as being like watching someone run for a taxi unseen then tripping them up and taking it for yourself. It's a horrible thing to do.
It has, however, spurred me on to pull out my sewing machine and make myself a dress.

I think it's more like two people running for a taxi, unseen by each other. Just because someone starts the race late, doesn't mean that it isn't fair that they win the race.

If you're watching and waiting until it would be impossible for the other person to win, without having bid on that item before, then it isn't a fair race.

But that's why you need to put your maximum bid at the beginning. If you do that, then it doesn't matter what anyone else does.
And the bottom line is that if someone gets in quicker than you (or me) then they win - whenever they started the race.

Ebay's other tricks.
Also beware of bogus biders and those whoes sales recomendations
look a bit to good to be true.Often there are fruadsters etc lurking about.Just beware and for the other 98 per cent of ebay,
you should have no problems.Enjoy!.

I'm afraid I'm a late bidder too! but I do it manually, as it's only sporting. Not heard of a auction sniper. But come to think of it, I think I got 'sniped' earlier today. That winning bid went in a bit sharpish... Never mind, another similar item will crop up tomorrow, and in a colour no-one other than me will probably like...
There are pros and cons of both early and late bids, but unfortunately ebay can get a bit 'every person for themself' at times. And if you can't beat 'em...

Of course the other benefit of snipers is that they bid on your behalf so you can set them up with your maximum bid long before the closing date and then not have to worry about it.
I use them mainly for that reason - my memory can be bad and I've often lost out on items just because I've forgotten when they close or I've got mixed up. eBay's reminder emails are hopeless (either come far too early or really erratically!) so it's an easy way to ensure my bid goes in on time.
It's sort of the name of the game with eBay - no one is to know that you're sitting watching an item right up to the last few seconds, so there's actually no intentional malice in sniping at the last minute. Whether you're outbid at an hour or a second before the close of auction doesn't matter - the fact is someone's willing to pay more than you so you don't get the item!

I think thats what bothered me most actually, the fact that I had sat there all day beating off other bidders with a stick and this person had come in at the last minute and almost effortlessly 'stole' 1st place!!!!
I'm such a sore loser :-(
I do agree however that's how Ebay works, and thanks to you lovely people I am now completely over my loss :-)
