Mortified!
Firstly sorry I have not been around much the last few weeks! I started my new job last Monday and it has been manic! No time during the day to hope on the site any more :-(
I was determinted to keep my burlesque life secret at my new 'city' job! I bought a couple of very smart suits from Austin Reed and headed off to Cannary Wharf last Monday for my first day at work.
At lunch time the woman I was working with took me for lunch. While we were chatting she said I think there is something you should know... last week some of the guys found your 'facebook', 'myspace' and 'website'! I was mortified!!!! I wished the ground could have opened up at the moment!
She said that most people, including my bosses, and the department head knew about the burlesque! They had seen the photos Tas took of me as Jessica Rabbit.... She said they though it was best that I was warned!
Apparently I am now legindary!!! I have currently locked down my 'Facebook' and made my Myspace private until it all blows over... but hey at least the cat is out the bag!
Anyone else have similar experiences?

If the cats out of the bag at least you can surf for burly chat and parafalania.
Don't be shy about it. Those guys took the time to search you out online,
Do the same to them and see what (if anything) comes up.x

From the sounds of it they don't disapprove though - unless there's stuff you've left out. I'm worried about my workmates finding out because I'm sure some of them wouldn't understand and may be a little bitchy to me (unfortunately my worry is based on the treatment of others which I've seen ...), but that doesn't seem to be happening to you. if it is, I can see why you're worried, and you'll just have to hold your head high and not let them bring you down (yeah right Fleur, easier said than done!). If they're just curious though, you only have to tell them as much as you want to. Who knows, you might even gain some new fans!
Either way, I hope it all goes well for you xx

thats really unfortunate...
i've just read an article in a retail mag about recruitment companies googling applicants. Quite scary when you think about it; one girl was sacked because she wrote on facebook "such&such is throwing a sickie"
numpty...
i started a new job a few years back and was horrified to have a booklet delivered with information for fresher's week advertisment opportunities. A middle page spread with me legless on the floor and covered in silly string didn't go down too well...
also a girl i know has just had to turn down a promotion at work due to her burlesque. The work was with a school and her employer didn't feel it would be appropriate.
sad...

I always put a different email on my CV from the one I have as my Myspace, not because I have any photos of myself particulary but because I don't really want work knowing everything about me! One of my friends was fired from her last job for writing about it in her blog, not naming the company but just generally saying how much she hated it! I'm starting a new (office) job tomorrow - I can only hope that I find some people there that are interesting and not 'office people', that would at least make it bearable lol!

There aren't many places to peform on Torquay (where I live) and there is always the risk that people I work with will see posters/flyers or even see me performing. I went to see my boss and was totally honest about it and he is fine with it. I work for the NHS in IT and so work with mostly men. As these things do, it has got out but generally people are just interested in what it actually is.
If your colleagues aren't bothered then I wouldn't let it bother you. Unless there is anything written into your contract then what you do in your own time is nothing to do with your employer/colleagues. (obviously teachers etc have rules about conduct outside of work, I believe there is something in their contracts about it).
The only time it is a problem (if nothing is in your contract) is if you are involved in illegal acts - which you aren't. So be proud of it!!! :-)

Apparently a lot of employers search for job applicants on facebook, myspace and other things like that just to see what they're like and the kind of messages people leave them - I think that's a bit unfair really but looks like the best thing to do is to make them private although it might not be ideal if you're trying to advertise - at least it sounds like your workmates are pretty understanding but I still think it's a bit rude of them to go looking at it!

Grrrrrr ! That makes my blood boil ! I would take that up legaly to other local authorities and as far as it had to go to upturn the dessision.
How dare they ! What could she possibly do ? rouse the children from there slumber to drive a minibus to the nearest burly show where she'd ply them with absinthe and make them smoke cigars on the street outside in trilbies ?
There's enough bloody ineptitude in schools now to screw kids up with red tape so not allowing the progression of a young professional is unforgivable.

I read about this in the Guardian the other day. I've now left all my networks on Facebook, so at least I can't be lurked on that way...
At least your new colleague was thoughtful enough to let you know - like when people are nice enough to tell you that you have spinach stuck in your teeth...

gosh, talk about intrusion of privicy.
A co worker spied me in this months Bizzare and then proceeded to take it around all the other girls in the office, all proclaiming how great I looked. This was sweet however I really wanted to keep Eva out of this Vanilla office job and already the questions have started!
xoxo Eva
