Questions for the singers
As I've mentioned recently, I am bored with the bread and butter vocalist bookings of pubs, singing one karaoke classic after another to a crowd who couldn't really care less if you were there or not. Ok, so not every venue is like it but a lot are and its gets to you after a few years. I love the burlesque scene, and music of a sexier more jazzy feel. I've dabbled a little in performing at a few fetish events, 'sensual cabaret' evenings, etc and want to now take it a little more seriously.
I know the question of song/performance lengths has come up before for the dancers and I'm wondering the same for the singers. How many songs/what length of set are we expected to perform at most burlesque events? Does this change if you manage to get into more corporate work?
I know although I've worked for years as a singer I'm probably going to have to do a few unpaid burlesque events to get my name around and get more work. Every event I do though means fuel into London and a fortune in babysitters, so I'd be working at quite a loss. If I'm doing OK how many events of this sort am I likely to need to do before I can start earning some money, and how much then?
I know all of this can be a little 'how long is a piece of string?'. I'm just after a clearer idea of what I'm getting into. If I'm going to do this I want to do it properly, get myself totally ready with sets, backing tracks, etc and go for it. I may later in the year have the chance of a residency I had a few years back (but in a new venue), where I have quite a freedom to try new things and I really want to be able to build from there
thank you lovely ladies
Keri -x- (who is so far definitely settling on the name - Midnight Blue)
