did the fashion show not let people coming know that there would be burlesque performance involved? a lot of things offend me so i make the choice not to partake in them. you cant please everyone but if it is clear what is at an event beforehand then people can decide for themselves wether they want to attend or not.

It was an absolute shambles, and it wasn't about offending Muslims, please lets not jump to conclusions and blame people who weren't there (to my knowledge, we were kept to one side for 5 hours, so apologies if I've got that wrong) - the one guy who didn't want us there (the one funding it) said it was because he was representing a Christian charity (both myself and another performer are Christians, we are not offended by what we do, nor are our families), he had brough his family with him (at 11 at night, to a trendy city-centre bar where there was a fashion show going on) and that it wasn't the image they wanted to project.
We had been there for 5 hours by the time they told us this, at any point during the night, or in the lead up to the night, we would have happily run through our acts if there were any concerns. I offered to speak to the bloke, hoping that maybe he just didn't 'get' what burlesque is - I would have been happy to keep my bra on at the end of the act for example if that would have been more exceptable - but was told there would be no point to this, he didn't even give us the dignity of a proper reason for not wanting the rest of us to perform, so now we don't know the real reason why we are 'offensive'.
I started off last night feeling really angry about what had happened, today I feel let down, humilated and unsure of what sensiblities we offended. If the man who complained did so because he didn't want his family to see that sort of thing, why take them out so late at night? If what we were doing was 'offensive' why follow Autumn's (very technically impressive) with a catwalk of beautiful, but scantly clad young things wearing a lot less than us - absolutely gorgeous bras, knickers and swimwear, but much, much less than we were wearing and shown for longer? If it wasn't the image they wanted, why booked us? Why not see what our acts were before hand if there were doubts? Why were the crowd loving it - yes they were relatively quiet, but relatively quiet compared to a all-burly crowd - we're British, it's takes a lot of drink to get us used to yelling without feeling self-conscious, lol? There were many rapt faces during Autumn's act, many dissapointed faces when they realised there was no more coming, and still there are no real explainations.
The running of night itself aside, the girls who were running it were lovely, and did seem genuinely upset/embarrassed to be letting us down so late in the night, but it's left me feeling really quite miserable, and you can tell that by the stupidly long rant I've just had! It could have all been avoided one way or another, but, and I'll make this point again, not to be bitchy, but just so people don't get the wrong idea - it had nothing to do with offending Muslims or Autum's frankly beautiful and funny 're-mixing' of Belly-Dancing, the sad thing is we will never know what it really was about, because we weren't really told or given the chance to ask.
Rant over (sorry!)

Well, I think that alot of interesting points have been made, and i am sure most all of us do consider our audience before picking an act. However, the risk of offending *someone*is always present with any art-form and maybe more particularly with burly. It is very true that, try as you might, you cannot please everyone. But: as long as you are true to yourself in what you do, then you can accept such hiccups as last night and move on, without it stopping you doing what you love. Especially with the lovely support of places like this, friends and the burly scene in general.
As Chumba-Wumba said "I get knocked down, and I get up again" (and I think something about cider- or am I thinking about another song?) xxxxx

Maybe you just want cider now after all that. Well you are all great performers and they sound like they let themselves down by not letting you know you were not right for the night, not needed and you could have gone home. Thats very unprofessional of them I think.

Everyone's already said what I wanted to, so I'll just say: don't let them get to you. There will always be idiots, and people who are ignorant about what burlesque really is. And as I've said elsewhere, I'm religious myself. Judaism is important to me, but I also love burlesque, and at the end of the day, only G-d Himself can judge me. I wish people would stop giving those of us who have faith a bad name.
