New cabaret-salon idea - feedback required
Dear All,
I am in discussion with a very well-known South London venue to produce a weekly cabaret-salon-club night. It would take place every Friday night, hosted by me, with a guest performer each week and then effectively an 'open mic' for cabaret and burlesque acts. It would be a chance to try out new routines, new material and ideas on a proper stage with excellent sound and lighting. We'd be looking for: singers, poets, striptease, comedy acts, physical theatre, dance, mime, live art - pretty much everything, really, that fit under the umbrella of 'cabaret'. What we want is to create an event where artists can try out new work in front of a lively and appreciative audience. The venue is in Vauxhall, so it's easy to get to from most of London.
The crucial question is - how many people would be willing to (a) perform at such an event (expenses-only!) and, more importantly, (b) come regularly as punters and bring friends? This idea is only viable if we can drum up a reasonable crowd every week. My fear is that this is the kind of thing that could fizzle out after a few weeks if there aren't enough people committed to it. But it could be a wonderful centre for an artistic community - more accessible to South Londoners than some of the other places that already exist. We'd be making links with a number of major arts organisations so there would be future projects that might spring off that back of this one.
So, in the interests of market research, can anyone who thinks this is a good idea and who might be involved please give me a show of hands? Just post a smiley face as a reply to this thread.
xx
