Gwendoline rarely teaches fandancing but as the acknowledged British queen of the artform with the biggest fandancing fans in the world (as far as we know!) she is giving a special class to MOB members. The Scool of G'lamour is being featured in December's edition of Cosmopolitan magazine.
The School of G'lamour showcases Gwendoline's unique and multi faceted approach to burlesque performance and draws on her extensive background in theatre and dance. Her
unfailing commitment to empowering women, spreading the word of burlesque whilst bringing elegance and glamour into the world can now be experienced by ladies throughout the
British Isles.
With an array of impressive credits to her name, including her recent appearance at The Sunflower Jam alongside such legends as Robert Plant and Paul Weller. Gwendoline performs
in high profile shows and has done so for the Marquis of Bath, Jasper Conran, Agent Provocateur, Deisel, Naomi Campbell and Theo Fennell amongst others.
Following her BA and MA degrees in theatre and performance, Gwendoline gained her teaching qualification at Central School of Speech and Drama, and went on to teach at many of London's top drama schools. As a post-graduate she studied the history of movement and manners from the 17th century onwards, working with top ballet dancers she traced the development of ballet from court movement and went on to relate this to the body postures used by models and showgirls. Gwendoline also draws on the practice of yoga and pilates, which form the bedrock of the movement taught at the School of G'lamour.
The class is broken down into two halves. The first focuses on posture and body alignment to create an elegant canvas on which to build and some tease work. The second half will
focus on the graceful and alluring art of fandancing.
All this seamless elegance and grace takes a lot of muscle control, as Eloise, a client at The School of G'lamour found out:
'Whilst working with Gwendoline I realized how little one uses the core muscles that are so essential for good posture and which we used so much in class. I have since continued
to work on my form and am able to power up from the inside; engaging with muscles that I do not usually use. In addition to the health benefits of the classes, I find that whenever I need to summon or gather my confidence, I simply engage with the teaching points and find them positively empowering in many different social settings.
Gwendoline certainly concurs with this:
'The particular art of burlesque that I perform is physically incredibly demanding, not just the dance element, simply maintaining poise, and posture is an art in itself, and is
essential for good presentation onstage."
This a rare opportunity to learn fandancing from the best fandancer in the country!
