Burlesque and Goth,do they mix?
I been wondering what people thought about this having had a lot of contact with burleque but also gothic people, esp if you vist slimenight or shop in Black Rose in for clothes/props for work.I just wonder if anyone thought that these two different strands of entertainment can work.

What sort of experience do you have in the burlesque world? Im sure we'd all love to see your work!
Goth and Burlesque, to me,. go hand in hand on a purely aesthetic level. Theres the corsets and the frills, big pointy shoes and elaborate makeup.but once you look away from the glamour, its pretty much chalk and cheese.

I think they can mix very nicely, different ways of showing off beauty. I think Burlesque could benefit from being a bit dark sometimes, like the other side of Dita Von Teese.

I think they've mixed already. A lot of the crowd that I see are ex goth/alternative, just a bit older but still like to dress up!
Performance wise, it's definately a good combo - pop along to the next Rockabaret and check out some of the acts there - quite dark, but still vaguely 'burlesque'.

Quick quiz
Artistic personality looking for and outlet to express yourself ?
Attracted to obscure writers, poets, painters,
musicians,?
Labeled as eccentric, odd, mysterious or weird ?
Attract all sorts of people ?
Then your most likely a Burlesquer. or a Goth
.or both.
Not to stereo type here but if i may.
Ahem - Those of us in life who posess liberal views, who live to create rather than destroy,
who look a little closer and dig a little deeper, always have and i fear always will be a margin of society unless a radical shake up happens.
So performers, artists, bohemians, goths, gays, and everyone inbetween tends to mesh together as one section of society.
Because were different ? because were special ! . and to be honest who wants to be
THE NORM ?

goth/burlesque
Burlesque and goth go hand in hand to my mind. I consider burlesque to be the more refined, grown up version of goth. Its a celebration of sensualness with a hint of the dark side. Goth seems much more masculine, whereas burlesque is much softer and feminine in appearance but i think the two genres blend seemlessly.

I'm not a Goth, but I do know that a lot of people do refer to me as gothic! You're right, I think much of burlesque is quite gothic according to the original concept, if not in the modern aesthetic. But I think there is an increasing crossover. more openmindednes? I have noticed that lots of fetish clubs have added 'burlesque' onto their dresscodes, and introduced burlesque lounges with retro music.
So maybe some goths see burlesque as a sub-genre of the scene?

My wife, Angel LaVey, and one of the other Scallywags (new burlesque troupe from the West Midlands) are Goths. I've seen their outfits and have to say that the darker elements do mix nicely with the other elements.

Goth v Burlesque
Surely Dita has shown the way? To an old softy like me, the beauty of Marilyn Manson is the way he uses Burlesque imagery and aesthetics. In fact his live act these days (no doubt under Dita's influence) is as much burlesque and vaudeville as it is goth - which is why the hardline zealots take exception. But don't believe a word of their sniping and, if you've never caught him live can I recommend it as I suspect few (if any) Burlesque lovers would be disappointed.
