I can think of another painted lady! How about the unfortunate Oola in Jabba's throne room from Return of the Jedi? More green skinned beauty!

Me, I love Lady of Burlesque (Stanwyck singing and talking without moving her mouth, and Take it Off the E-string), Dancing Lady (might be apparent.), Ziegfeld Girl (Lana Turner's lush, especially) and all those oldies. And Applause, of course, for the totally detached and blasé facial expressions of the flesh-coloured-tights-and-no-corset-chorus line

Default Betty Page movie

Has anyone seen the recently released Betty Page movie yet? It's going to be weeks before it comes to our local art-house cinema, grr! I may as well buy the DVD once it's out (?27th September?)

I saw "The Notorious Betty Page" recently. My wife told me about the movie and complained because it was only going to be shown in Edinburgh and London. Obviously some cinemas had a change of heart because the Cineworld in Birmingham City Centre decided to run it for two whole weeks (sic). I'm not a big Betty Page fan, I had heard of her but until my wife joined the ranks of Burlesque performers I was indifferent to the lady in question.

Because I know very little about Betty Page I cannot comment on how closely the film followed her life. I believe that the actress chosen to play Betty was a close match to the original in looks and appearance. The film was entertaining and funny, but did have some unpleasant moments which may upset some people.

On a side note, I laughed my backside off when I read a Message Board thread on the Internet Movie Database website. People winged about the actress playing Betty, and suggested either Angelina Jollie (please no), Allysa Milano or Rose Mcgowan of Charmed (no figures due to Hollywood) and finally Ditta Von Tease (plastic boob job a no no for the director) as suitable replacements - talk about lots of miscasting.

As for my fav. Burlesque movie, back on topic at last, I'm not too imaginative. I'll stick with Moulin Rouge for its mixture of the new and the old in a spellbinding fairytale.

I teach burlesque and I show lots of clips in my classes. The films may not have burlesque themee overall, but these scenes are amazing:

Christopher Walken in Pennies from Heaven--every burlesque performer I've worked with cites this as a great example of striptease!

Diane Lane in The Big Town with matt Dillon, doing a full-0n classic fan dance.

Michael Ontkean stripping out of his hockey uniform in Slap Shot--also one of my favorite movies ever.

And of course the Elvira tassel-twirling clip!

You can find the Walken clip and the Elvira clip on youtube.

Best,
Jo Weldon

Just for the look of it - Scaramouche!!

Beautiful ladies (Janet Leigh - wow!), fantastic costumes, dancing, fencing and two-storey wigs.
