Default Has anyone ever actually jumped out of a cake?

Hi all,

It's my birthday soon and I was thinking of doing an act jumping out of a cake at my birthday party. I was wondering if anyone had actually done it, and what the cake was like?

It probably isn't going to happen because I have less than no time to actually build myself a cake, but any pointers would be helpful. I imagine some kind of sturdy wooden frame with fabric or cardboard covering it would do the trick.

Or, ooo, I wonder if I could make a collapsible cake out of fabric and variable-sized hula hoops? Then I wouldn't have to worry about getting out of the damn thing, I could just let it collapse around me!

Any ideas would be very much appreciated. It's my first birthday since getting into the whole burlesque thing, so I want to celebrate it properly

Hi there - I regularly jump out of a cake, and it's pretty much the wooden frame with fabric/cardboard type thing that you suggest, but it has to be pretty sturdy to take your weight safely! I believe one of the US performers, (maybe even Jo Weldon?) does a version of the cake routine where the cake is made of fabric and hoops, and the top tier is a small hat with a candle on the top, which she keeps on - very original and very cute!

Thanks Lily. Sounds like I might not have time to construct something sturdy enough. I'll have to get my birthday thinking cap on and come up with something else.

I agree with lily on the cake front. Its a logistical nightmare.

I have recently started jumping out of a giant cherry bakewell.

In order to be sturdy and large enough they end up weighing a ton even if they are made out of the lightest materials available.

Then you have to hire vans £££ and strong men (my favourite part) to carry you and the cake around.

Ruby Blues has a giant faberge egg she comes out of and this takes four men to lift her on stage and her poor man Joe's back is a gonna.

Then theres the waiting and getting into your cake without anyone seeing you otherwise whats the point. So you need a stage with curtains really. Not to mention awkward costumes/headresses getting crushed. I am no contortionist

I know that the lovely Lily nearly "baked" in her cake while an over enthusiastic father of the bride gave his loooong speech.

Therefore in short large props are great but goodness you need patience.

Default Other ideas

You could come out of a Pez dispenser? I made one for Halloween one year out of foam core (it's got card on either side and foam in the middle), tissue paper, and cellotape. But you can make lots of things with foamcore. (it's even paintable) You can get it a paperchase but maybe have to go to an artist's store to get larger sizes. You can also use it for Cocoa's idea of the present.
Good luck - and we wanna see pictures of whatever you end up doing!''
