I want to know how to make feather fans. I dont get how to attach the feathers. Is one feather attatched to each stick? I would really like to know as I'm studying costume yet none of my tutors have any advice. Do you think there are any fan making workshops? I can only find workshops for paper fans and can already make that style.

Hi Scarlet
I dont know of any classes but there must be someone out there who teaches it. I just figured it out as I went along. I made the base of the fan first - trimmed the staves and painted them, before fixing them together with a kind of bolt-thing. I then drilled holes (2 sets) through each stave and threaded ribbon through to make the fan, well, fan out, if you know what I mean! I then glued on the ostrich feathers - I used 2 for each stave (double them up) as they are quite flimsy but I guess that depends on the type and quality of the feathers you are using. I then secure the feathers to each stave by binding them with fishing line (nice and strong and clear so it doesnt show up). Finally, I hide the bottoms of the feathers and the fishing line by trimming each with some ribbon to match the colour of the staves.
Hope this is of some use. Let us know how you get on.

Daquiri, your fans look fabulous!
LRF said you were thinking about trying to sell them on line. I would be very interested in working with you to get a set made for myself. What do you think?

hey girls, the fans look lovely!
Miss Blush, where did you get the staves from? On the internet? My fans are from Ostrich.com, but I fancy making a pair myself, with bamboo.
Are there any other places other than Ostrich that sell good feathers?

You know I'd be uber keen to learn about fans as well Daiquri. I foresee a night of cheap plonk and feathers ahead.

(I hope no body minds me bring this back up )
Im going to take the plunge and make my own fan, im looking on the Ostrich.com web site and im a bit puzzled by how wide im going to need the feathers. Is it better to go for the 25 inch + and 8 inch wide (the fan is going (I hope!) to be about 5 to 6 feet wide) or could I go for the smaller (and cheaper :P ) 17 - 20 inch long and 7 inch wide?
And how many feathers did others find they used?
