A standard fixed pole is not very expensive at all, but if you want it to be removable (for space-saving reasons) they become more expensive.

The reason why the free standing poles are so expensive is because they need to be incredibly stable.

when do you need it for? I have some designs for a portable chinese pole for acrobatics, I've done some pole dancing on one of those and it's not too bad. Not as shiny a pole though.

i currently own a 9 metre chinese pole that has three rigging points and it completly covered in rubber. I'm the envy of all my friends let me know if that could be useful. Where is it for?

I have had alistage (http://www.alistage.co.uk/) recommended many times. Again, not cheap but it doesn't do to scrimp. I danced at a gig and someone had made a pole and it broke when my friend was on it - not a mistake to make! They are expensive and I would love a second hand podium pole too but they don't seem to come up. My friend in London hires hers out. Maybe you could canvass dancers in your area to see if anyone would hire you one? Otherwise it looks like a hefty investment, but then you could hire out your pole ;-)

Yes she was - thank you for asking. Kind of brought the show to an abrupt end though.
