Default Bettie Bangs (fringe)

Hi
I am thinking of going a bit Bettie and getting some Bettie bangs (fringe), but I am a little scared or making such a bold hair-stylie move!

Has anyone got any tips, recommendations or support?

i.e. ideal hair thickness, depth of fringe on crown/head, fringe length, maintenance of fringe, do you all have to curl it under every day, general public reactions to fringe (not that that bothers me at all) and a Hairstylist vs. DIY being let loose with the scissors!

Kittie I see you have had a Bettie page fringe at some point?! Can you or anyone else who has had one help me out with my questions?!

I know I should obviously be asking a professional all these questions, but after much searching on the net I am just looking for some general feedback on those who have had personal experience with such a fabulous fringe.

Thanks
M xxx

PS: If anyone knows of a "Rockabilly Hair Specialist" in the Brighton/London area, names and contact details would be much appreciated.

i think the most important thing to think about when getting bangs is how long and that would depend on how long your hair is. if your hair is mid back or longer, don't go any higher than just above the eyebrows with a fringe, it just won't look right.
also i don't think your fring actually has to be that heavy to look heavy (does that make any sense, hehe) i have bettie bangs now and at first i was terrified of cutting in a fringe but i started with quite a whispy one and then gardually cut more and more in but i still don't think it's actually a really heavy fringe (there's not much of it) but when it's curled and styled i think it looks pretty good.

if you're hair has a natural kink to it you have to style it everyday but i find this is pretty easy to do with some really good hair straightners.

also, nobody will bat an eyelid if you get a fringe, i walk around everyday and get stared at but that's to do with what i wear rather than my hair!

hope this helped but it probably didn't!

it's all about face shape,

start with a light fringe cut midway between your hairline and eye brows and then as it grows you can see how you like it.

Lots of people get the really short geometric fringes and hairdos but they don't look quite right and i think this is because severe haircuts look complimentary to soft facial features and vice versa. So it depends on how you wear it as much how it is cut.

Bettie's fringe was very thik and parted from a very high position on her scalp. This was because she had a very high hairline and having the fringe framed her face better.

However, most people do not have such high foreheads and a heavy fringe will be overpowering and crowd their features.

Start light and see how you like it. You can easily spray a light fringe into the rest of your hair or pin it up with a clip.

Hi,

I live in Brighton. My sister is training to be a hair stylist. She does my hair for my Marilyn gigs.
I am also good with hair. I used to have long black hair with a bette fringe before I went blond to do Marilyn. I have lots of experience with show girls hair, I help out back stage every month at the Kroon kat lounge in Brighton, helping dancers with hair and stuff.
If you ever need us give us a tinkle.

Hey
I've been thinking about a fringe for a while now but it's been scaring me, I haven't had one since I was 12! This has helped! My hair is kinda thin and fine so I'm not sure if I have enough hair for it. If anyone could point me in the right direction of a good hairdresser (preferably in the midlands but I am prepared to travel for a good cut!) then please let me know, my last hairdresser (who was really tuned into vintage styling) moved to Edinburgh - a tad too far!
Thanks
xXx

It is entirely dependant on your face shape and hair type (pop some photos of yourself in your gallery space. if your avatar is anything to go by I wouldn't reccomend a fringe on such a round face).

I have a wee cowlick so for me to have a good fringe that sits flat, I shave the first 5-8mm of my hairline. not reccomended unless you are really committed to a fringe. I cut my own hair, (have since I was 10 so I almost know what I'm doing now) but am concidering a hairdresser. Cheery Bomb Rock, what is the name of your last hairdresser, are they working in Edinburgh at the moment?

I have the same problem as Foxy, i have about 3 widows peaks (or cowslicks?) on the hairline, and up until recently had bangs, i just don't have enough time in the day anymore to try to keep it from parting and i found that it got greasy so fast from me trying to pull it together. I did try every type of hairspray and styling gel to keep it together, i finally gave up and it's at the lenght were it's too short to style and to long to keep down and look decent, but i did love me bangs, covered my rather high frankinstein forehead! pps:

i have a sort of bettie esque fringe at the moment. its a bit of a pain in the ass though keeping it looking good as my hair is naturally curly so i either have to undercurl it vintage stylee or straighten it out to make it tlok half decent. rah.

i have a love hate relationship with me fringe, over the past couple of years i keep getting it cut, growing it out, then wishing a still had it and cutting it again.

caz-o-rama,

if your outgrowing fringe is bugging you might i suggest some sea kelp. it comes in tablet form from holland and barrets and its cheap as anythin. its not a miracle grow but it does stimulate the thairoid gland which encourages hair growth and good hair health (along with skin and nails and bright eyes). i used it when i was trying to grow my hair and it really helped.

Default blunt Bettie fringe

I have a kinda Bettie fringe, but more because of Louise Brooks than Bettie. I've let my short bob grow out now for cash/a change reasons but I would never lose my fringe whatever other hair I had. I have a really low hairline and a widow's peak AND a really round face and everyone said I would look terrible with a blunt fringe as it would shorten my face even more- but now if I ever clip it back I don't think it suits me at all and I really love my bangs. I like super short ones ( like at least an inch above the eyebrows) but I can't do that due to my stumpy forehead so I usually ask for a cut about half an inch above my brow. My fringe also comes from almost the middle/top of my head to give the illusion that I have more forehead! I now have a hairdresser ( although I can tell she thinks I'm mad) who will do this for me without question- but it took a long time to find one- they ALWAYS want to 'feather' and 'soften' the edge and can't understand why I want it so severe. My hair is very straight but also very thick and quite springy so it does take a bit of talent to make the edge lie straight ( has to be cut in sections) . I would suggest going for a more generous length ( to the brow) and then try tonging/curling it up to see how it looks shorter. This is what I do when mine gets a bit too long. If you like it, get another quarter inch cut off next time. It will grow really fast so I say GO FOR IT! Cherry Bomb- my hairdresser is a local one in Erdington if you want to try her out- give me a call/email and I'll give you her number!
