Corsets
Hello everyone,
As someone new to burlesque, I've been going to nights for six months but I've not got a lot of clobber, I'd like to ask some advice about garments.
I've just read Dita's book which I loved, and although I have a couple of corsets and bustiers I'd say they are more at the "high street" end of the chain than something a true burlesque lover or performer would wear.
Now I'm aware that corsets can cost an awful lot of money, but better to get a good quality one which will be a sound investment and last that a cheaper version that will not look as good - correct.
With this in mind, and I'm not sure if such a thing exists, do any of you artistes (or anyone else) have suggestions for where someone who's not that flush like myself could get an affordable corset?
Perhaps you also have some tips for someone who hasn't bought one before and what I should really be looking for?
Thanks,
LRF

www.eternalspirits.com - their corsets are fantastic - Dita has even modelled them in a magazine!
Obviously I don't wear them myself, but Kittie and Gwendoline Lamour swear by them.
Visit the site or give them a call on 0845 234 0197 and speak to Susi - tell them that I (James from Ministry Of Burlesque) recommended you and she should be able to sort out something for your budget.
She's a lovely person to deal with too!

Hi there littleredfairie!
My sister has just set up her own corset making company and is looking for models that can trade a photoshoot for costume. All pictures to be used only for promotional of 'Katerina Stojanovic' clothing label, mostly pictures for the web site. Losts of burlesque, showgirl and gothic outfits need to be modelled.
One thing though, she won't make waist training corsets, she's a bit of a feminist.
If you're interested I'm sure we could arrange something for you.

Personally I would recommend Puimond (dot com), they are well made and very easy to wear, even if you're not trained. They are a bit pricey though

Thanks for all your help everyone
For someone like myself who hasn't worn lots of corsets, can you tell me if there is such a thing as a starter corset? I know fairygodmother do some.
I take it I shouldn't look into waist reduction or tightlacing corsets unless I'm planning on wearing them a lot of the time?
Also, is a tightlacing corset better?

I know nothing about tightlacing but I know I love my Vollers corset. It started off uncomfortable, but the more I wore it the better it got. I still don't know if I got used to it, or it got used to me.
So 3 years later (I've worn it every week on the ghost tours which was 4 hours of walking backwards shouting at people outside in rain, hail, sleet, snow and underground so it got a lot of wear) It is still perfect.
I am a big fan of customising. My corset cost £60 and has had variations of beading, fringing and other haberdashery added and removed and all manner of ways. It is my first and only corset.
I love my corset in a way that could be verging on being a bit wrong.

same same
hey fairy,
same same foxy, my black vollers 5 years now evry week
covered in parafin , glitter and face powder.
i stick mine in a pillowcase on silk wash in the machine
hang to dry in the sun or airing cupboard. perfect
( twice a year )
i always customize my corset by adding pink / green / silver bits and bobs depending on act !
i have quite a few others as well as i have been learning to make them.
i have made 7 now - including my 4 bridesmaids white ones.
if you live in london and want something to start in i could make something up for you cheaply.
all the best

You probably wouldn't want to lace it up as tight as it will go to start off with. People like Dita von Teese have years of corset wearing experience and can reduce their waists to such itty bitty sizes as a result. When you put it on, wait half an hour and then lace it a little tighter - don't go for the full shebang straight away.
Good luck! (:
