Do you think that a small stage is better in a small, intimate venue with 40 or 50 people or a big theatre that sits two hundred?
I've only ever been to small, intimate clubs with wee stages and everyone sits very close to the stage and it was lovely! We got talking to loads of other people and the vibe was just brilliant.
What do you prefer?
This depends on what I am doing. For band work a big stage is great as one can get the kit spread out ok and have room to move around. For doing magic, a big stage is useless for closeup magic so, an on the floor very small stage is a good choice or, no stage and just wander around if there re only 30 to 50 people sat at tables. The problems come in when one goes to the venue and the tables are doted around, to do intimate magic it is sometimes best to have all the tables in a horseshoe shape, some times this also fails utterly, especially when the numptie who hates magic desides to move around the table and sit with his/her back to you! When doing stage magic then a stage is obviously needed but, even there some times one can get away with a smallish stage or else one need BIIIIIIIG illusions that cost a bloody fortune to make and upkeep!

i change my music sets, dependent on the venue
the show i run is a 1200 seated Edwardian theatre, so i don't do anything subtle visually - as it would be lost completely
and i stick to big sounding songs
because its a better space filler!
and the acts that are booked, use the space well
if they didn't... it wouldn't go well!
