Burlesque must straddle taboo and propriety - this is it's very point.

Sensitivity, relevance and wit of course are invaluable to the success of such entertainment.

That is a very thought provocing article Amelie.

I think that as long as the satire is aimed at human nature in general and not a specific group of people (The Nazi's did not just target Jews, but many other minority groups including Black and disabled) and is done tastefully then it should be OK.

thanks so much for your input everyone...im looking at a few acts one just a straight forward fan dance routine and the other a more satiric kind of striptease involving an extremely wholesome seeming beer hall barmaid (again set to period music during ww2) who initially is coming across as being totally downtrodden and somewhat looking down at the whole environment, at the end of the night with loads of halfdrunk steins lying around, lo and behold rather than swiiling the lot away atouch of "minesweeping" occurs and then the inhibitions begin to be lost ending up with a complete turn around in personality, actions and attitude...the swstika pasties having been hidden under the rest of the traditional german dress...much as many of us hide our "nasties" underneath somewhat wholesome outer layers...any pointers would again be appreciated....

thanks,im still a bit unsure of being on the right track as im aware that just because something makes sense to me doesnt neccessarily make it universally appealing but then its more than a little naive to expect universal acceptance in any walk of life...

just re-read that article amelie, thanks for the link...food for thought indeed. xxxx

The best way to see how it translates is to perform it in front of a friend who can be honest with you (without trying to change everything ) about what works and what doesn't.

I was very lucky to have a wonderful friend critique my first act, there were a few bits which didn't work and I had to either illustrate further or drop altogether. Don't be disheartened if this is the case for you, because now I feel my act is better than ever xx
