Fleur, I agree with you about everybody having an opinion. This "anon" wasn't the least bit polite or diplomatic about it though. If an act or performer just doesn't do it for you, then fine, but in my eyes to start criticising them and their costumes, which they no doubt put a lot of time, effort and money into, is several steps too far.

Do journalists actually get time to do much research, particularly for a local newspaper? In an ideal world all news would be reported accurately. Also, there are far more pressing issues in the world today that are reported in a biased and untruthful way.

The article could've been a lot worse! It made the news - and it wasn't what I'd call bad press either!

Well, on one level I agree with you, and on another I don't. Yes, maybe she shouldn't be quite so condemning, but on the other hand, are we being slightly overprotective because it's 'our' genre and because we know the people involved? Are we overreacting because someone has dared to say negative things about our genre and our performers? If people can wax lyrical about how good the show was, how is someone expressing the opposite opinion any different?

I've not seen all of the performers who were there at the show, but the ones I have seen and know are great - no debate there. So I'm sure it was a good show - but there's no way something can appeal to everyone. And the amount of effort performers put into their acts is immaterial really. You only have to watch any reality TV show like X Factor to know that people can invest huge amounts of time, money and effort and still not be any good (not that I'm saying this applies to any of the performers at the night). But as a paying audience member, if you've sat through a show that hasn't entertained you, why should you care how much effort they've put into it? You've gone there to be entertained, and you haven't been. So the performer has failed in their objective, in your eyes - why should you not say so and instead think 'well, they've put so much effort into it, they did their best, I'll let them off'? We're all involved in the scene and we can appreciate the effort a performer puts into their act, we can appreciate references and all sorts of other things that general audience members aren't interested in. People go to shows to be entertained. And if this person wasn't, why should she be slated on public fora? Isn't that slightly hypocritical of us?

I don't know, I'm sure it was a fabulous show, and I'm sure that 99% of the audience enjoyed themselves thoroughly. But I don't think that it's realisitc to expect everyone to have taken to it immediately, and I think it's unfair to vilify someone for voicing their opinion. If she'd have done it on this forum, it might have been tactless, but on a general article on the show? Just adding to the discussion in my eyes ...

Just 10 days after her debut and already getting on the front page - Miss Ditzy Diamond what's your secret?

I've read the article - it strikes me as a review of a Burlesque show by someone who is doing a job but not really into the scene, but the review wasn't bad for someone of that mindset.

From the numbers at this show and the numbers already sold for the next show I'm starting to think that Stoke-on-Trent is becoming the next hot spot for British Burlesque .

But surely the very fact that she didn't give a name hints that it was more than "not my thing". If that was teh case, why did she leave it anonymous?

And really, if you went to a show and didn't like it, would you then leave messages on an article about it sayng how you didn't like it and the costumes were shoddy? I would just leave it rather than whinge publicly.

Considering that the Christmas show is nearly sold out I doubt that even a negative comment can stop this Burlesque steamroller.

As for the Dita comparissons - meh - not everyone can command a fee of £25K per performance. I'm sure if other performers could earn that kind of money they would have amazing outfits.

What a fabulously eclectic range of neo- burlesque acts on offer. The evening was a joy from start to finish and for me it embodied all that is so empowering and life affirming about this scene.

The night had everything from comedy to surrealist mayhem.

This evening painted a rich picture of modern burlesque to me! What an intellectually and culturally poverty stricken scene burlesque would be if it was constrained by narrow definitions.

The overwhelming success of the night is evident. With still 8 weeks to go the tickets are all but sold out again for the December show. Many of the tickets have been snapped up by members of the audience from Saturday night eager for another wonderful night's entertainment. Roll on December yayeeeeeeee!!

Nope I get just as annoyed when people say personal things about footballers. This is why I don't buy newspapers any more - I'm fed up with a culture that says it's ok to slag of people's personal lives or their dress sense just so we can pretend we're better than them. We're not. Everyone has the right to be who they are. And people have a right to their opinions, but personally I think if one hasn't got anything nice to say, then one should keep one's thoughts to oneself. But before you all shout at me for being naive and the world isn't like this that, my views are how I'd like the world to be rather than it ever will be.

Don't get me wrong I think the reporter's review is ok - it's positive but she says it's not her sort of thing. The ANON person isn't as nice, and rather than saying, it's not my sort of thing, tries to make out that the show was sub-standard. That's my issue.

Blogs, forums, and other websites that allow anonymous comments play a valuable role in giving people the chance to convey their perspectives publically. However, there is the danger that views expressed or facts stated might not actually be true.

A way to combat anonymous criticism would be to raise the issue of a lack of credibility. When someone posts or sends in a comment anonymously then I feel we have to take it with a great big pinch of salt.

Criticism is healthy - but art critics, media critics etc are accountable for their comments and these comments are always accompanied by their names. They own and take responsibility for their opinions.

I think credibility is gained by being prepared to be open. You might ask why anon isn't open. What does anon have to hide?
