It worked rather well, I have to say. I don't use it for feather fans though, I use it for my stained glass fans which are much more fragile and take up a bigger area. I had to use huge great semi circular bits of corrugated cardboard to keep the shape though, and it still needs a bit of playing with to make it super stable. But it doesn't stop ignorant people walking into it when you carry it around!!
Any advice on feather fans which don't close all the way? Mine have chunky staves and can only be closed into a sort of wedge shape, so a tube is out of the question ...
