Year Abroad in Germany - working for cabaret venues?
Hello all,
A slightly odd question, perhaps, but I am a language student with more than a keen interest in the world of cabaret and burlesque .
Next year I'll be off finding work in Germany and France, and was hoping to find some sort of job doing backstage / administrative things for cabaret clubs or similar.
Never having been to anything even remotely like this in Germany, however, I really don't know where to begin looking, asking and whatnot.
Any advice appreciated!

There are branches of Dr Sketchy in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Berlin.
The Fete Fatale event in Berlin runs fairly regularly.
You may also like to get in touch with the following performers to introduce yourself and ask if they know of any backstage positions:
- Juliette La Doll
- Hedoluxe
- The Teaserettes (lead by Sandy Beach)
- Pinup Lili

hi wiskers,
try the GOP Theaters, they are in a bunch of cities and run variete shows.
friedrichsbau in stuttgart sometimes has burlesque performances on, might be worth a try.
or go straight to queen calavera in hamburg which is a bar dedicated to burlesque .
good luck with it.
say hello if you stop by in munich.

As I understand from an insider, burlesque at the GOPs has been discussed with the head management team and they've opted, for the time being, to avoid burlesque striptease. These theatres tend to attract a lot of families (and therefore, children) and they're concerned about alienating this loyal audience.
Friedrichsbau is a wonderful circus-variety theatre, a real pleasure to work at. To my knowledge there are no burlesque shows planned there in the immediate future. As for backstage positions here, most of the people I know working there have been at the theatre for a long time and have climbed the ladder working low-level backstage positions and gradually getting promoted to more responsible, technical roles. They're a strong team with a warm sense of family between the staff.
There are plenty of other variety theatres all over Germany, so if you're interested in working in this kind of environment, go and browse for variety theatres on Google
Good luck!

Thanks so much for all your help - have been without internet for a while, and entirely missed your replies.
They certainly haven't gone unnoticed, and I'll be chasing these up!
Thank you!
Whiskers.
