UK Artists Performing in Canada/USA: Visa/Work Permit Issues ANSWERED
I was looking into Visas for work in Canada as I was considering applying to be a part of the Montreal Burlesque Festival (sadly I'm working in Germany during the dates this year, so won't be able to make it).
Citizen and Immigration Canada have a really useful website (easy to use and navigate) which has lead me to understand that performing artists DO NOT (unless working in a bar/restaurant) need to apply for a work permit in order to work in Canada (paid or unpaid). Details are listed here: Working temporarily in Canada: Jobs that do not require a work permit
As for America, it seems their website's gotten more easy to use over recent months:

USA visas cost €131 (application fee).
I hope this is of use to people searching the forums regarding international Visas and Work Permits.WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

Worked in canada several times, and will again this year in Toronto in late august - never needed any kind of visa.

My experience
Hold on everyone! As EU residents, if you have a contract, you need a visa. I just did Scarlett James' show in Montreal, and I needed/got a Canadian work visa.
And vice versa, for Americans/Canadians coming here to Europe, your agent can easily sort out a one-day/short performance work visa.
If you're doing a "cash under the table" sort of gig...one can take their chances. But if your subject to a baggage check...and they'll ask what these costumes are for...and you're on the next flight back home.
