LOL yeah sorry diameter, you'd need to be twice my size for that to be a radius !

The hole in the middle and the top platform are proably the most important parts of the cake, Now the size of the hole is obviously dependant on the size of the person coming through it and how fast they plan to come through it, a slow exit from the cake means a smaller hole could be used whilst an explosive exit means a larger one is required or injuries are likely to occur, knocking yourself out whilst trying to get out of the cake, or dripping blood from arms or legs due to grazes probably won't go down too well :-)

Then once you are out of the top you need something stable to stand on, now the big film acts do this by having a raising platform inside the cake but that either means a big complicated mechanism or a bunch of guys pulling ropes off stage, neither is practicle really for a small act, nor are they quick, although it might be possible to adapt a sisors lift fairly quickly to do this, so the alternative is to provide a flat ring on the top of the cake, it will mean that standing on the top the performer will have to have one foot either side of the central hole but it should be possible.

This sounds exciting - good luck with it! Make sure you show us the pics!

I reckon square is def going to be easier for you. It will be more sturdy, plus it will be easier to get perfect symmetry and to decorate nicely.

    Good luck!

Actually whilst square is a lot easier to build in order to make it more sturdy you need to use thicker materials, mainly because a cylindrical section is less prone to collapse than the equivalent sized square section, and thicker materials means heavier, so there are pros and cons in both designs.

I did actually think of an alternative idea to steaming plywood (which is quite honestly a pain) you could have a relatively lightweight steel frame welded up and simply cover the sides with card whilst the tops would have 3/8 inch ply on them.

This would of course work for square or circular designs almost equally well, though circular would use less material and therefore be lighter

Hmmm...why would a Center Fold Strip site make pop out cakes for sale?.... I didn't click the link so maybe it's not what i think.

    ANWAY!
I have a suggestion. I have been fantasizing about doing a pop out cake routine myself! You're cake idea sounds spectacular.
I would suggest if you want to make it at the scale you are envisioning, that you call up some local carpenters/contractors. When i was playing with the idea of a giant jack-in-the-box, i called all the local guys that advertise in the newspaper. I had a few positive responses, and they are more affordable. Some people are just really handy at building stuff and looking for a little extra cash.

    Good luck!

I did click the link and they're a 'Strip-a-gram' service, which I imagine do get a lot of call for oversize cakes. It's a classic after all.

Indeed it is, however I note from teh images on their website that teh top two tiers split down the midle which whilst it does make it easier for the person inside to climb out also makes it blatently obvious that it's a fake cake

Utterly random thought process but does anyone have one of those pop up laundry baskets/storage tubes. they are fabric around wire circles and collapse down into one circle. Kinda like a crinoline skirt. Done in a much larger scale of wire/fibreglass/ crinoline rings and fabric and a base and a lid?

i recently tried using laundry baskets for making a structure and it was an unmitigated disaster, despite sounding really good on paper.

i'd definitely elect to build something sturdier next time - but then it's storing and transporting it that becomes the problem.

can't wait to see what it comes out like xo

I didn't mean actually using laundry baskets or crinoline skirts. I meant use the same theory of large rings between fabric that can collapse down and pop up to create a shape.
