Hello chicklet,
Firstly - don't expect overnight miracles, you need to work at your flexibility over a sustained period to get anywhere as you can damage yourself if you push your body too hard, especially when it isn't used to it. For the ultimate in stretching I'd recommend yoga - ideally go to a couple of classes which should set you in the right direction. If you are already going to burlesque classes you might not want to make the financial and time commitment to another series of classes, but if you could just attend a couple then the instructor will be able to tell you if you are doing the stretches correctly. - and therefore safely. Also, yoga works according to the level of flexibility of the individual so no-one would expect you to wrap your legs around your head at the first session. There are a lot of good yoga books and DVDs around but seriously think about giving the classes a whirl. If nothing else then a good yoga class will give you a lovely glowing feeling afterwards.
